Teething, What to Expect, Symptoms and Remedies

When a mother receives a newborn into this world, she happens to be the happiest woman in the world. A baby comes with responsibility and commitment since it is expected that the parent is one person who will be right by the baby’s side all through their childhood.

When Does Teething Start?

Before a baby grows into a fully grown-up responsible human, then they’ll have to go through several processes in life before all this comes to pass. One of these processes is teething, which starts when the baby is about six months of age and can span up to when the child is the age of three for the growth of baby teeth.

This is quite a young age if you consider the number of months mentioned, but the advantage of teething is that the baby will be self-sufficient once it has the baby teeth, whereby they can now chew on their food without any problem.

Teething Symptoms

The period of teething will be very frustrating for about 80% of the parents since their babies experience teething symptoms which are very disturbing for the baby who doesn’t know what pain is in this new world.

Babies are also going to show varying symptoms, and it is the sole responsibility of the parent to try and find out what teething signs your baby is showing.

By identifying the teething symptoms, you can quickly help alleviate the pain associated with the teething symptoms. Therefore you are going to have an easy time as well if your baby is comfortable. Some babies will have prolonged pain while teething, whereas some babies will have an easy time sailing through this childhood process.

Another teething symptom you can quickly notice is the swelling and reddening of the gums. This may be followed by drooling due to excessive secretion of saliva. Saliva is usually produced in large amounts due to irritation from the gums.

The excess saliva may at times choke the baby, accidentally leading to coughing. This should not be mistaken for a cold since the cold symptoms are apparent and evident to notice.

There are some cases when the baby can have diarrhea while dribbling has started; this is very dangerous since the baby might be having a specific infection that is disturbing them.

As a parent, you should visit the baby’s pediatrician since it can worsen or even dehydrate the baby due to a large amount of water lost from the body.

Drooling may still be very dangerous since it can cause a teething rash around the mouthparts. Since drooling is more common in children between 2-4 months, it is pretty easy to note that the baby has a rash on the face.

Such a rash may make the skin very delicate hence the child will experience some discomfort. It is good that whenever your baby dribbles, you use a moisturizer that is most suitable to your toddler’s skin and wipe off the drool more regularly to avoid appearance such as rashes on your child’s skin. Teething is not meant to be a painful moment but a time to celebrate the most significant change to the baby.

What to Expect

Due to this pain on the gums and interference in the baby’s typical oral environment, the baby may end up repelling advances to feed them either through breast or even bottle-feeding.

Therefore, you should feed your baby more often to maintain a standard supply of nutrients to the baby’s body. Due to this change in the baby’s routine during teething, the baby is going to have interrupted sleep, which will be very disturbing for the parent. If the baby desists from feeding, you should take a step further and get to see the teething baby’s pediatrician.

One of the first teething you will see is that the baby will always try to bite on anything it comes across. Exerting pressure by chewing on objects helps the baby relieve the discomfort the baby is feeling.

The swollen gums cause pain and irritation, which makes the teething baby very uncomfortable hence will put anything it finds on their way in their mouth. Since anyone can get used to some pain, then the baby is also the same.

Once the first two teeth, which happen to be the central incisors of the lower jaw, rapture out of the gums, the baby will get used to the pain until all the twenty baby teeth appear. During this period, when the baby is experiencing this pain resulting from teething, the baby will show some side effects such as restlessness. The baby is nervously happy and excited or even irritated by small things.

The amount of reaction from this pain on the gums may differ due to the different intensities of pain experienced in other children. To ease this discomfort in your baby, you can give them a rubber ring to chew on. This is the best idea since you will be assured that it is clean enough for your baby to put it into its mouth, avoiding any stomach complications or ailments.

Teething Remedies

Since every child will react differently during this process, it is good that you try various teething remedies. One of the most desirable teething remedies is the amber teething necklace that has proved to work with a majority of the teething babies it has been tried on or even used. It is just like any other necklace that is worn on the neck.

The parent should take precautions cannot sleep or be unattended while having the necklace on since the baby might decide to play with it and strangle themselves.

There are also some simple home remedies you can try to reduce the teething symptoms’ impact. Some of the homemade remedies include a chilled-out washcloth that is put in a freezer for about half an hour, and then you can give your teething baby to chew on.

Chilled-out carrots or even apples have also proved to be suitable objects that the child can chew on. All you should ensure is that the thing is not so small that the baby can swallow it.

Chilled out water or even apple syrup has been proved to calm and soothe the nerves hence works towards realizing the same goal- alleviating the baby’s teething pain.
