Constipation Causes and Treatment

Constipation Causes and Treatment

Constipation is a condition in which the bowels are evacuated with difficulty or at long intervals. It is a disorder so common that people have instead become indifferent to it. Many think there is no cure for it and that also, it is probably a natural part of living. These ideas are, of course, untrue.

Constipation is a source of needless suffering. There is no reason for its existence unless a person is in some advanced stage of an organic disease resulting in obstruction of the eliminative tract. If not relieved at once, constipation will double the work of the other organs of elimination. This will, in turn, deplete them, disturb their normal cellular activities until they become ripe for disease. This is the reason why constipation is cruelly known as the “mother of all diseases.” This is also why we are exerting the nature, causes, and effects of the ailment. All naturopaths believe that many diseases can be prevented if constipation can be blotted out of existence.

The Causes of Constipation

Constipation results when a morbid matter is retained too long in the body because the bowels are not functioning normally. It is mainly attributable to a lack of fiber in the diet. The modern diet of devitalized and predigested foodstuffs hardly eliminates residues and creates plenty of toxic gases in the intestines. Constipation also results from improper food combination, faulty moving habits, over-use of commercial cathartics and purgatives, chronic use of coffee, tea, liquor, iron pills to enrich the blood, lack of chewing in the mouth, too many varieties of food in one meal especially during parties of pleasure where appetite is not restrained. This is the case where it is better “to keep the mouth shut and the bowel open.” Constipation may also be caused by kinks or narrowing in the bowels, rectal pressure due to falling, adhesion in the bowel walls resulting from operations, and the chronic use of enemas.

People who are “Pot-bellied” usually are sufferers of chronic digestive disorders like constipation, pyrosis, indigestion, flatulence, hemorrhoids, and so forth. The unabashed health builders dictionary gives the interesting definition of a “pot-belly” or protruding abdomen.

The preponderance of gases in the colon is easily remedied by eating new garlic and other carminative helps.

Drink also plenty of fruit juices in between meals.

The sitz bath is a proven method of relieving long-standing constipation. This may be done as much as desired. But 3 or 4 sessions a week is already beneficial. Fomentations to the abdomen with a gentle manual massage are also very helpful. The sitz bath is best done when the patient is relaxed.

Regular outdoor exercise such as walking, swimming, bicycle riding, deep breathing, and gardening is stimulating to the bowels. After a meal, it is best to take a short leisurely walk in the open air to stimulate the organs of elimination. Never sleep immediately after a meal since the brain is fully absorbed in the digestion of the food, and the sleep, therefore, will barely be refreshing or normal.
